Understanding Frailty
The Basics
The British Geriatrics Society defines frailty as a health state in which the body’s systems gradually lose their built-in reserves, so that even a small setback, like a minor infection, a change of medication, or a few days in bed, can have a bigger effect on health and independence than it would otherwise. Best understood the way you’d think about diabetes: something that can be identified, managed, and improved, not something to simply accept.
Age UK draws a clear distinction: someone can be living with frailty with no other diagnosis at all, because frailty describes resilience, how well the body bounces back from an illness, injury or stressful event, rather than a count of what’s on a medical record.

The Evidence
2023 randomised trial, 168 participants across 6 GP practices: 20 minutes of daily home exercise, alongside eating enough protein, for three months. Around two-thirds of those who started the study frail were no longer classed as frail by the end.
