Questions

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask us most often, including what happens in a class and how we adapt sessions for different health conditions.

Each session is 60 minutes and follows a gentle, structured format. We begin with a warm-up to prepare your body, move into the main exercise programme — which focuses on strength, balance or movement depending on the class type — and finish with a cool-down and stretch. Your instructor will introduce themselves, explain each exercise and offer adaptations throughout. There is no pressure to perform, no competition and no judgement. Most people tell us they feel completely at ease within the first two or three sessions.

Every exercise we teach has at least two versions — an easier option and a more challenging one. Your instructor will guide you towards the version that suits you best on any given day. If you have a specific health condition, joint pain, limited mobility or any other consideration, tell us before the session and we will tailor your programme accordingly. Nothing is compulsory. You work at your own pace, rest when you need to, and progress at a rate that feels right for your body. This is not a one-size-fits-all class — it is designed around you.

Being nervous before your first session is completely normal — and extremely common. Almost every member we have tells us they were apprehensive before they came for the first time. Our instructors are experienced at welcoming new participants and making sure you feel comfortable from the moment you walk in. You do not need to introduce yourself to the group, perform in front of others or do anything you are not comfortable with. Just come as you are. We will take care of the rest. Many members say that within ten minutes of their first class, they felt completely at home.

If you have had a fall — or if you are worried about falling — our Falls Prevention class is specifically designed for you. It uses the clinically proven FaME (Falls Management Exercise) and Otago frameworks, both recommended by NICE and NHS falls services. The programme is progressive and fully supported, starting from a safe baseline and building strength, balance and confidence gradually over time. Referrals from GPs, physiotherapists and social prescribers are welcome. If you are not sure which class is right for you, contact us and we will help you decide.

Yes — our classes are highly suitable for adults managing arthritis. Our Level 4 PSI instructors reduce range of motion, avoid high-impact movements and use gentle, controlled exercises that keep joints mobile without causing discomfort. Chair support is always available. Most participants with arthritis find our classes significantly more comfortable than they expected — and many tell us the movement actually reduces their pain over time.

Absolutely. We monitor exercise intensity carefully and offer seated alternatives for all standing movements. We encourage a conversational pace throughout — if you can speak comfortably, you are working at the right level. You can always slow down, sit down or stop. There is no expectation to push through any discomfort. Our instructors are trained in cardiovascular conditions and will check in with you throughout every session.

Our classes are very well suited to adults experiencing cognitive changes or early memory difficulties. We use simple, consistent cueing, clear visual demonstration and repetition. We never single anyone out or draw attention to difficulty. The familiar structure of each session helps participants feel safe and know what to expect — which reduces anxiety and builds confidence week by week. Many carers accompany their loved ones and are always welcome.
