Getting Started

Yes — all of our current classes (Strength and Balance, Zumba Gold, and Tai Chi and Qigong) include standing exercises, so participants need to be able to stand and balance independently. If that’s not the case for you right now, get in touch and we can help point you in the right direction.

45 minutes. That’s the optimal length to deliver a fully structured functional fitness class — long enough to properly work every aspect of your fitness (strength, balance, mobility and cardiovascular fitness), but not so long that fatigue sets in. Once participants get tired, focus and technique start to slip, which is when the risk of injury rises and the benefit of the session starts to fall away. 45 minutes keeps every class effective, safe and sharp from start to finish.

Every session follows the same structured format: a warm-up to prepare your body, the main exercise programme, then a cool-down and stretch. Our classes are not gentle — they are deliberately structured to challenge you, because it’s only by challenging yourself, at a level that’s right for you, that you build real gains in strength, fitness and balance. We don’t take photos or videos during classes, so you can relax and focus on the session.

Neither — every exercise has at least two versions, an easier option and a more challenging one, so your instructor can meet you exactly where you are.

No. Classes are designed for adults 50+ at any starting point, including complete beginners.

Comfortable clothing you can move freely in, and supportive flat shoes or trainers.

Our classes don’t use mats. We ask participants to bring resistance bands if possible, along with a water bottle — staying hydrated is important.

We ask new participants to register in advance using our online registration form. If you’re not comfortable completing this online, a paper version is available to fill in before your first class.

For our regular pay-as-you-go classes, drop-ins are welcome if there’s space — though booking ahead is still a good idea so you don’t miss out.

We don’t currently offer a free taster session, but there’s no need to commit — our classes are pay-as-you-go, so you can come along to your first session without signing up to anything longer term.

Group sizes vary quite a bit by venue and class — your instructor can tell you what to expect at your local session.

It’s completely normal — most of our members felt the same way. Instructors welcome every new face personally from the moment you arrive.

No. You’re never expected to introduce yourself, perform, or do anything you’re not comfortable with.

Yes — you’re welcome to sit and observe a class before taking part, if that helps you feel ready.

We ask you to arrive on time where you can, since the warm-up is an important part of the session — arriving after the start isn’t ideal, but do speak to your instructor if you’re running a little late.

Yes — you don’t need to wait for a fall or a problem before starting. The UK’s 2026 physical activity guidelines are clear that the biggest health gains come from moving from little activity to some, whatever your starting point. Many of our members join proactively, simply to stay strong, steady and confident for the years ahead.

Health, Safety & Suitability

Yes, we carry public liability insurance for all of our classes.

If you haven’t exercised for some time, or you have a medical condition or concern, it’s worth checking with your GP first. If you’re already active, you’re welcome to simply come along.

Our Hillingdon programme is commissioned by the council as part of its official Falls Prevention Programme, and our instructors are trained in the Otago approach — recommended by the NHS for building strength, balance and reducing falls risk in older adults. Because we work within that same evidence-based framework, GPs, physiotherapists and other health professionals in the area do refer patients to us.

Yes. Every session starts gently and every exercise is offered at an easier level first — there’s no expectation to keep up with anyone else.

Yes, always — even a brief word before your first class helps your instructor offer the right adaptations for you from the start. You’re responsible for your own health and wellbeing during class, and you’re welcome to sit and rest whenever you need to.

Our Strength and Balance classes use the Otago framework — a clinically proven approach recommended by NICE and NHS falls services — to progressively build the strength, balance and confidence that reduce fall risk over time. For the fuller picture on reducing your risk, see our Complete Guide to Falls Prevention.

Yes. Our sessions are built around Otago, the falls-prevention exercise programme recommended by the NHS, and every course is planned to progress your balance and strength gradually rather than all at once. Many participants notice a difference within a few weeks of attending regularly, though — as with any exercise programme — how quickly you notice changes will depend on your starting point and how often you attend.

Let your instructor know before your first class so they can suggest the right position and adaptations for you.

Our current classes all involve standing exercises, so they’re not set up for wheelchair users. A chair-based exercise class elsewhere is likely to suit you better — get in touch and we’re happy to help point you in the right direction.

Classes accommodate arthritis through reduced-range, low-impact exercises and chair-supported alternatives. Many members find gentle, regular movement reduces stiffness over time.

Most people with osteoporosis can exercise safely, and strength and balance work is often specifically recommended. Let your instructor know so they can suggest suitable adaptations, and check with your GP or physiotherapist first if you’ve had a recent fracture or have particular concerns.

Let your instructor know your recovery stage so they can adapt exercises for you.

Let your instructor know, so they can help you find the right pace and adaptations. Regular movement is widely encouraged for people with Parkinson’s, and our small-group, instructor-led format allows for that kind of individual attention.

Let your instructor know, and bring anything you need to manage your levels during the session.

Intensity is always monitored and seated alternatives are available throughout. A simple guide: if you can speak comfortably during the exercise, you’re working at the right level.

Let your instructor know, and speak to your GP if you have any specific concerns.

Sessions use simple, consistent cueing, clear visual demonstration and repetition, so the structure stays familiar and reassuring from week to week.

Let your instructor know so they can guide you verbally through each exercise.

Let your instructor know so they can make sure you can see demonstrations clearly.

If you’re on medication that affects your energy, balance or blood pressure, mention it to your instructor and check with your GP if you’re unsure — otherwise there’s no general reason it should stop you joining.

Please stay home and rest — you’re welcome back as soon as you’re feeling better.

Our Classes

Strength and Balance, Qigong and Tai Chi for Health & Fall Prevention, and Zumba Gold, with Forever Fit launching soon.

Strength and Balance focuses on building the specific strength, balance and confidence that reduce fall risk, using the Otago framework. Qigong and Tai Chi combines slow, flowing movement with breathing and balance work. Zumba Gold is a lower-impact, dance-based cardio class set to music.

There’s no single best starting class — it depends on you. Get in touch and we can help you choose the right one for your goals and fitness level.

Our instructor team brings over 100 years of combined experience and holds qualifications including Level 3 Otago, Level 4 Postural Stability Instructor (PSI), FaME, Tai Chi for Health, Qigong, and Zumba Gold.

The NHS recommends adults 65+ do activities that improve strength and balance on at least two days a week — many members build this in with one or two classes weekly.

For our regular pay-as-you-go classes, no — come as often as suits you.

Yes — instructors gradually progress your exercises as your strength, balance and confidence build, always at your own pace.

Yes, you’re welcome to mix and match classes to suit what you enjoy and need.

Funding & Cost

Prices vary by class and venue and are shown clearly on the timetable when you book. You can pay per session or save with a block booking — no contract, no commitment.

If you live in Hillingdon, our Strength and Balance programme is fully funded by Hillingdon Council: a free 12-week course, and you can self-refer — no GP needed. In Ealing, we fund a discounted rate ourselves — 7 classes for £35 — for participants referred by a GP, physiotherapist or social prescriber.

Both programmes are suitable for participants at low to moderate risk of falls, who are able to stand and balance unaided.

To join the Hillingdon programme, complete our Hillingdon registration form. In Ealing, ask your GP, physiotherapist or social prescriber for a referral.

Complete our Hillingdon registration form, and you’ll be sent confirmation of your place.

Ask your GP, physiotherapist or social prescriber about a referral, then complete our Ealing registration form.

No — the discounted rate is reserved for professional referrals. Self-referrers are very welcome, just at the standard class rate.

You’re expected to attend the full 12-week programme to get the most benefit from it.

Missed sessions still count towards your total allocation of 12, so please let us know in advance if you’re unable to attend — for example, due to a medical appointment.

Each participant is entitled to attend one 12-week Strength and Balance Programme free of charge through the funded route.

Your referral card is valid for 10 weeks and can be used at any of the Strength and Balance classes.

You’re very welcome to continue attending classes on a self-funded basis, to help you maintain and build on your progress.

Both are designed to help improve strength, build confidence, reduce the risk of falls, and support you to become more active in a safe, friendly, structured environment — including maintaining or improving muscle strength, balance, flexibility and reaction time, slowing age-related muscle decline, increasing confidence in everyday movement, and supporting mobility and independent living.

Yes, please do — if you know friends, neighbours or family who might benefit, we’d love for them to register too.
